About This Wine

From a cool year, this wine has softened and relaxed in bottle after 3 years in bottle. It's lightish in colour, but this is deceptive as the palate is complex, savoury and long with smoky, almost spicy notes. It's serious a continental (don't use the B word....!) style, not a big fruit bomb.

Winemaker Jeff says: "The colour is a bright ruby garnet with flashes of crimson at the rim. Aromatically this wine is quite expressive showing red currant, cranberry and raspberry fruits with typical Waitaki spiciness and an underlying note of darker fruit. The oak is understated, gently supporting the wine rather than playing a dominant role. In the mouth the wine shows distinctly varietal cool climate Pinot characters fine sinewy tannins and a long, tapered finish. It is a style made to enjoy while young with simple, honest bistro food such as slowly braised lamb short ribs or pork cassoulet."

World Wine – "A lovely bouquet of Pinot with aromas of limestone & gentle savoury tones, light red fruit aromas of red cherry, plum & raspberry. Oak aromas are gentle with slightly sweet scents of vanilla & baking spices. Youthful on the palate with a mixture of fresh & slightly tart red fruits – these will ease and integrate over the next 1-2 years; fruit flavours match the bouquet with cherry in the lead. Fine chalky tannins & plenty of acidity. A slightly lighter-weighted wine with a youthful energy and charm, light savoury chalky finish. Well made." Cameron Douglas MS
