Col d'Orcia is located on the southern slopes of the municipality of Montalcino and extends over 540 hectares from the Orcia River to the village of Sant'Angelo in Colle. With 140 vineyards, 108 of which are dedicated to the production of Brunello, the company is the third largest producer of Brunello di Montalcino. It is currently presided over by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, whose family, already involved in the production of liqueurs in Piedmont, acquired the property in 1973 from Stefano Franceschi, a descendant of the Florentine family that had owned it since at least 1890. The name means "hill overlooking the Orcia River" and seals the intimate connection between the company and the place where its vineyards are located: a place where the exceptional combination of calcareous, skeletal-rich soil, the location—sheltered by Mount Amiata and not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea—and the windy, Mediterranean climate yields grapes of the highest quality, healthy, concentrated, and rich in color and tannins. The vineyards and the entire estate are managed using organic farming practices, forming a true organic oasis in Montalcino. The grapes, harvested and selected strictly by hand, ferment in shallow, wide steel tanks to facilitate contact between the must and the skins and extract color and polyphenols. The wine ages in Slavonian oak barrels and French oak barriques for up to four years, completing its refinement after bottling. Structure, elegance, and nobility distinguish Col d'Orcia wines, a company that has collected over 50,000 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Annate over the years: a true treasure carefully preserved in the tranquility and beauty of the historic cellar.

Wines of Tuscany
Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian, is one of the most iconic Italian regions for wine, scenery, and history. Located in central Italy along the west coast, its production of Sangiovese wines is world renowned. Some of Italy’s most famous subregions for Sangiovese such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can be found here.
Tuscany makes both simple and top tier, age worthy Sangiovese wines. At entry-level you have a wine that is pizza and pasta friendly with bright and juicy red fruit. On the other hand, the highest quality representations of Sangiovese are remarkably complex with flavours ranging from sour cherry, balsamic, dried herbs and leather to fresh earth, dried flowers, anise and tobacco.
In evidence of the quality produced, Tuscany produces the third highest volume of DOC and DOCG quality wines in Italy, only trailing Piedmont, and Veneto. DOC and DOCG wines are the highest designation for Italian wines, while you will often see the IGT classification used to represent wines from Toscana that do not reach the standards for DOC/G.
There is another unofficial class of Tuscan wines called Super Tuscans which also command high prices. These wines are often made from international wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, with or without Sangiovese.
