Critic reviews

James Halliday – A blend that manages to mitigate any overt sweetness thanks to Pannell's steadying hand. The vision, one of fidelity to site as much as a savoury liquid to parry with our table. Violet. Crushed rock, ferrous graphite, licorice strap, kirsch, boysenberry and Seville orange riffs wind their way along a firm band of tannin. The length, impressive. The appeal, immediate. The drinkability quotient, high. Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion

About this Wine

51% Koomilya Shiraz (Upper Tintara); 49% Aldersey Grenache (Seaview). Both parcels handpicked late February and co-fermented, gently pressed after 10 days on skins. Racked of lees and sent to old French oak vat from Malolactic fermentation and extended maturation. Bottled without fining in July 2020. Held in bottle before release to realise its true potential, 7200 bottles produced.

The aromas of McLaren Vale: sea air, iodine, earth, dark fruits and wood spice. Blackberry, ripe mulberry, compote and blueberry all meld and are framed by musk lollies, fine tobacco leaf, cedar and sandalwood with a bass of graphite and ironstone. Long, and supple flavour tickle the palate. Enveloping and rich from the first sip. Freshness and drive from the Grenache supported by dark flavours and textures of the shiraz. The tannins are lacey and in the perfect spot for consumption. The choir is in full voice and the harmony is profound. - Stephen Pannell

Adelaide Hills

The Adelaide Hills is one of the largest geographical wine regions in Australia, and amongst the most diverse in terms of climate, soil and topography. Because of this, many different varietals are planted here with the most dominant being Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It is generally thought of as a cooler region, especially when compared to neighbouring Barossa to the north and Mclaren vale and Langhorne Creek to the south.

NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has been popular in Australia for a while now, but Adelaide hills Sauvignon Blanc (the most planted grape in the region) could be considered the Aussie Savvy Blanc. From www.adelaidehillswine.com.au about their Sauvignon Blanc: “Wines that are textured, edgy, vibrant and dry with exceptional fruit definition, length and crispness that marry superbly with summer seafood.”

You can also find some cool climate shiraz from the Adelaide hills, defying the more common big bold style that is usually seen in Australian Shiraz.
