For generations, Vat 8 has been a trusted cellaring red from the Hunter Valley. It’s a regional benchmark that pairs Shiraz with Cabernet in a way that’s quintessentially Australian. The 2023 carries on that tradition, sourced from several of Tyrrell’s top estate vineyards.
Shiraz takes the lead, bringing generous, supple fruit and warm spice, while the Cabernet adds backbone and a firm, grippy finish. Maturation in small 225-litre French oak barrels lends refinement while keeping the fruit at the centre. The result is richer and more brooding than the estate’s flagship Shiraz, yet it remains a true expression of the Hunter.
It’s built for the long haul, but a decant will open it up nicely now. This is a dependable, expertly crafted red from one of Australia’s longest-standing winemaking families, and a bottle that earns its place in the cellar vintage after vintage.
