Yalumba Distinguished Sites is a family of exceptional wines; each carefully
sourced and masterfully crafted to capture the true essence of specific, special
sites from which it is grown. This “Fine Dry Red” is an example of Yalumba’s
commitment to, and mastery of, the quintessential Australian Cabernet and
Shiraz blend. Fruit to craft this wine is picked from vineyards in Eden Valley’s
beautiful high country.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
A wet winter set the vines up well for a good
start to the growing season. A drier than average
spring meant the vines responded quickly, growing
and flowering well and setting a good number of
bunches. Summer was warm with dry days and the
important cool Eden Valley nights that ripen the
grapes and maintain freshness and natural acidity
respectively. The long, balmy summer into March
helped complete ripening these perfectly balanced
and flavoured grapes.
TERROIR/PROVENANCE/REGION
Sourced entirely from two Eden Valley vineyards.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Miles
vineyard at Craneford and the Shiraz from Yalumba’s
Short’s block vineyard on the southern outskirts of
the Angaston township. From these vineyards comes
a wine of intriguing complexity that’s as expressive as
the earth in which the vines are grown.
TASTING NOTES
A complex array of currants and savoury herbs,
lifted red raspberry jubes and florals then into fine
cedar that sits on the edge of greenness and
ripeness. Medium to full depth with a balanced
concentration that still exhibits the refinement of
structure, acid line and tannin profile that FDR1A
is renowned for.
FOOD PAIRING

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.
A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.
Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.

James Halliday – "The FDR in this wine's name stands for 'Fine Dry Red'. If it were me, I'd call it 'ALC', or 'Aussie Luncheon Claret', but I guess that's why I'm not in marketing. Eden Valley fruit for this classic Australian blend and it's a deeply coloured, deeply fruited and perfectly poised wine that shows pristine black fruit characters, layers of spice, licorice, earth and a roasting meat tone. There is a very impressive density to its fruit without becoming overblown or suffering loss of clarity, and the tannins melt into the wine as it rumbles off into the distance, all latent power and opulent fruit. Lovely stuff."
