Chateau Calon-Segur 2000-Red Wine-World Wine
Chateau Calon-Segur 2000

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. (NM)

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Jeb Dunnuck - Showing beautifully, the 2001 Calon-Segur is now fully mature, yet should hold at this stage for another decade or two. Beautiful currants and assort dark fruits, notes of lead pencil, tobacco, and forest floor, medium to full body, and integrated, silky tannins all define this elegant 2001 that's a joy to drink today. It's not going to get any better, but it’s a beautifully regal Claret that offers loads of pleasure.

Wine Spectator – Has a beautiful nose of crushed berry, spices and nutmeg, with a hint of coffee. Then turns to licorice. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish of vanilla, berry and cinnamon. Beautifully crafted. Best after 2014.

Wine Spectator – Delivers gorgeous aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice, with hints of tobacco and spice. Full-bodied, offering a lovely texture and refinement. Very long and beautiful, with tangy acidity and lively fruit. A rich, yet very balanced, Calon. This is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon instead of the normal blend with 40 percent Merlot. The château is now using 100 percent new wood. Like the changes.

Wine Enthusiast – This wine is superb. With its power and structure it will age over 20 years or more. Backed by blackcurrant and jelly flavors, it shows great fruity attractiveness even at this early stage in its development. It will develop slowly and evenly to become a reference point for the vintage.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Robert Parker - Tasted at the Château Canon vertical, the 2005 Canon is evolving into a quite gorgeous Saint Emilion. One can still discern those brown spices infiltrating the ripe red and black fruit. There is fine mineralité here, great focus, perhaps just a hint of dried blood that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. It is a very complex Saint Emilion with immense purity and style, a wine that you have to keep coming back to in order to understand. It's at that pivotal stage between primary and secondary notes, the red and black fruit being overtaken by cedar, morels and a touch of game. It gently lifts and fans out to a quite captivating finish. Dare I say that the 2005 Canon is the pick of the three over 2009 and 2010? There...I've said it...it is a quite brilliant wine. Tasted October 2015.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Jeb Dunnuck - The 2009 Chateau Canon is brilliant in every regard and certainly one of the finest wines from this estate I've ever tasted. Based on 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet from a Grand Cru terroir located on the upper, limestone-driven plateau outside of the village of Saint-Emilion, it’s still youthfully ruby-colored and boasts a beautiful perfume of blackberries, black raspberries, white flowers, chalky minerality, truffle, and dried flowers. Firing on all cylinders, with incredible complexity and sweetness in its aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional texture, building tannins, and a finish that won't quit.

James Suckling – Wonderful nose with strawberries, cherry blossom, and vanilla. The red opens up with blueberries, milk chocolate and sweet licorice. Full and juicy on palate with pure dark fruit and velvety tannins. So nicely layered texture and long in the finish with red fruit and crushed chalk. The texture is superb.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Jeb Dunnuck - Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc that’s from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66), it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years. Hats off to Nicolas Audebert as well as the team of Thomas Duclos for one of the wines of the vintage!

World Wine – “The 2015 Cap de Faugères is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Silvio Denz. Pliant, succulent and inviting, it possesses striking fruit density and balance, especially at this level. Iron, smoke, leather, licorice and herbs given this Merlot-based red added shades of nuance. The 2015 has turned out beautifully. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.” 89 points - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – “The medium garnet-purple colored 2015 Cap de Faugeres has a ripper of a nose, featuring warm plums and baked cherries with hints of garrigue, forest floor and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, plush and with a savory/meaty character in the mouth, it features impressive restraint and finishes on a mineral note.” 89 points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

James Suckling – Very pretty fruit with dark berries, plums and currants. Hints of sweet tobacco. Medium bodied, firm and silky. Lovely, juicy finish with delicious acidity at the end. The 18 per cent of fabulous cabernet franc in this makes it special. Hard not to drink now, but better in 2023.
