James Halliday – A well-made, flavoursome chardonnay, ticking lots of the boxes for the dictionary definition of the variety, perhaps in a lighter and fresher vein. It's all about nectarine, green apple, ginger, toast and cinnamon spice in the palate, bright and set just below medium weight, with a limey finish. Easy drinking. The perfume shows off apple, jasmine florals, cinnamon and nectarine and feels pretty to sniff on. Good, in an elementary way.

Heirloom Vineyards Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2023
White-pale-gold; bright, and as if luminescent. Nectarine flesh, white peachskin, straw cut but yesterday. Ripe green apples, lemon zest and a tiny amount of pith. Mandarin freshly - and carefully - peeled, yet the segments unbroken. Bare hints of chilled fruit salad and apricots in the fruit bowl float by before the bouquet’s secondary elements waft in: some almond and some lanolin, some butter and some vanilla - all so subtle they could be easily missed by a connoisseur in an unnecessary hurry. A generous yet well-behaved palate of stone fruits checked and massaged into balance by a citric acidity. There is a taut tension here, which makes the structure of the wine long. Minerality sails effortlessly in at the back of the palate, with pings of bath salts and then more citrus and then a mineral water texture and quality. Great depth of fruit, but great structure to match. The flavour is as if stone fruits and a few tropical fruits are - off stage - yodelling in the background.

Adelaide Hills
The Adelaide Hills is one of the largest geographical wine regions in Australia, and amongst the most diverse in terms of climate, soil and topography. Because of this, many different varietals are planted here with the most dominant being Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It is generally thought of as a cooler region, especially when compared to neighbouring Barossa to the north and Mclaren vale and Langhorne Creek to the south.
NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has been popular in Australia for a while now, but Adelaide hills Sauvignon Blanc (the most planted grape in the region) could be considered the Aussie Savvy Blanc. From www.adelaidehillswine.com.au about their Sauvignon Blanc: “Wines that are textured, edgy, vibrant and dry with exceptional fruit definition, length and crispness that marry superbly with summer seafood.”
You can also find some cool climate shiraz from the Adelaide hills, defying the more common big bold style that is usually seen in Australian Shiraz.
