About this Wine

Pete Schell has a knack for turning the unexpected into something special, and the 2024 Spinifex Clairette is no exception. Clairette, a Southern French white grape often found in Rhône blends, gets the solo spotlight here, and the result is a fresh, textural beauty that shows just how versatile Barossa whites can be.

The fruit comes from a single parcel of hardy vines in Rowland Flat, tucked into the elevated southern Barossa. Slow ripening allows the grapes to develop flavour while holding onto their natural acidity—a quality Pete loves in his wines. After a quick three-hour maceration, the fruit was pressed to tank for fermentation. No malolactic fermentation here—just 10 months on light lees to add a bit of texture and weight to the fresh, lively fruit.

It’s all about balance in the glass. Bright aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and a hint of fresh herbs set the stage, while the palate is vibrant and textural, with citrus and stone fruit flavours leading to a crisp, clean finish.

If you’re into whites with personality and a little edge, this is a brilliant choice for fans of textural whites or anyone ready to explore something different.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
