Gaja Conteisa Barolo 2021 is one of the flagship single-vineyard wines of the Gaja estate, sourced from the celebrated Cerequio vineyard in La Morra, widely regarded as one of Barolo's grand cru sites. The name Conteisa, meaning "contest" in the Piedmontese dialect, commemorates the historic dispute between the communes of La Morra and Barolo over ownership of this prized hillside. The vineyard's combination of calcareous marl, clay, and sandy soils produces a style that is renowned for elegance, perfume, and silky tannins. The wine is matured for approximately 30 months in oak, balancing power with refinement.
The exceptional 2021 vintage reveals an intensely expressive bouquet of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, violets, blood orange, forest floor, and aromatic herbs. Beneath the floral character lie layers of spice, liquorice, and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate, the wine combines remarkable concentration with precision and freshness, delivering vibrant red fruits framed by finely polished tannins and mouthwatering acidity. The structure is powerful yet graceful, with a mineral core that carries through to an extraordinarily long finish.
Critics have described the 2021 Conteisa as one of the finest recent releases from Gaja, praising its purity, complexity, and longevity. While already captivating, it is built for extended ageing and is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 25 to 30 years, developing further layers of truffle, tobacco, dried flowers, and savoury complexity.
