Gaja Sperss Barolo 2021 is one of the most iconic wines in Italy and a benchmark expression of Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo. First released in 1992 following Angelo Gaja's return to Barolo, Sperss takes its name from the Piedmontese word for "nostalgia", reflecting Gaja's long-held desire to once again produce great Barolo from estate-owned vineyards. The vineyard's calcareous clay soils and Serralunga's cooler, more structured terroir produce a wine renowned for power, depth, and extraordinary longevity. The wine is matured in a combination of French oak barriques and large oak casks, balancing richness with precision.
The exceptional 2021 vintage delivers a profound aromatic profile of black cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, blood orange, liquorice, violet, crushed stone, and exotic spice. Beneath the fruit lies a deep layer of graphite, forest floor, tobacco, and balsamic complexity. On the palate, the wine is intensely concentrated yet remarkably refined, combining vibrant red and dark berry fruit with powerful but polished tannins and vibrant acidity.
