About this Wine

Rob has been known as The Dirtman since his university days because of his deep connection to the earth. He is not only a highly-experienced winemaker and viticulturist but also a trained geologist, and he walks every section of our vineyards during vintage (harvest) to identify and analyse sectors that are influenced by geological variation. Decisions of what fruit is eventually picked is made down to the individual vine and bunch level. This attention to detail results in wines of exceptional quality and flavour.

The fruit in The Dirtman Shiraz is sourced from vineyards in both the Barossa Valley (78%) and the Eden Valley (22%). The two regions are distinctly different in terms of climate and dirt. Bringing them together allows us to craft a wine that celebrates classic Barossa Shiraz generosity and plushness, with a backbone of finesse that is ideal for aging.

Our 2023 Dirtman Shiraz is a masterfully crafted wine that marries the boldness of black fruits with the nuanced influences of toasty oak, brown spices, and dark chocolate. Its generous flavours of ripe plum and blackberry fruit, combined with persistent tannins make it a compelling choice for those seeking a rich and satisfying Shiraz experience.

The 2023 growing season featured above average winter rains followed by a perfectly mild, fine, dry harvest period. Temperatures were milder than average with few hot days. Ripening was slow, enabling good retention of fine varietal flavours.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
