James Halliday – Sourced from 48yo vines on the 2.2ha Block 2 on the Hay Shed Hill property in Wilyabrup. Matured 18 months in French oak barriques. The nose presents a classical combination of black pepper, plum, raspberry, cassis and mulberry, backed by spiced oak. The palate follows suit and is further ameliorated by the presence of finely grippy tannins which caress the fruit through the lingering finish.

About This Wine

Dense dark red to black colour of great intensity. The 2020 Hay Shed Hill Block 2 Cabernet Sauvignon has a dense blood red with a dark centre. The wine displays ripe berry aromas of great intensity with underlying dusty and earthy characters typical of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. There is depth to the nose indicating there are reserves of complex aromas yet to develop and be exhibited in the wine. The palate is substantial - this is a big wine by Western Australian standards with intense and fully ripe, fleshy sweet fruit filling the mid-palate with great palate extension driven by the ripe and mature tannin. The mouthfeel is robust but the tannins are smooth.

Margaret River Wine

In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.

For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.
