Brash Higgins Merlot 2022

Brash Higgins Merlot 2022 is a distinctive and highly individual expression of McLaren Vale Merlot, sourced from the clay-rich soils of the Lennon Vineyard. Produced by Brad Hickey, the wine showcases the winery's signature amphora winemaking approach, with fermentation in both clay amphorae and open fermenters before returning to clay vessels for maturation. A small addition of Nero d'Avola contributes freshness, structure, and an exotic edge to the final blend.

Deep purple in colour, the wine opens with an aromatic and unconventional bouquet of dark grapes, black cherry, oyster shell, earthy clay, black tea, orange peel, and black jellybean. The palate is smooth and generous, revealing layers of dark cherry, spiced plum, blackberry, and savoury herbs. The Nero d'Avola component adds vibrant acidity and fine tannins, creating a wine that is both energetic and beautifully balanced.

Unlike many richer Australian Merlots, the 2022 release emphasises freshness, texture, and drinkability. Notes of dried violets, earth, and subtle spice linger through a long, savoury finish. The amphora maturation enhances purity and site expression, resulting in a wine that is simultaneously modern, textural, and deeply connected to the unique terroir of McLaren Vale.
