Château Canon 2018 is one of the standout wines of an exceptional Bordeaux vintage and a magnificent expression of Saint-Émilion's famed limestone plateau. Owned by the Wertheimer family of Chanel since 1996, Château Canon has established itself as one of the leading estates of the Right Bank, consistently producing wines that combine power, precision, and remarkable elegance. The estate's vineyards sit on clay-limestone soils surrounding the historic village of Saint-Émilion, providing the freshness and mineral tension that define the château's distinctive style.
The 2018 vintage opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, violet, rose petals, crushed stone, graphite, and subtle spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, displaying layers of dark fruits, plum, liquorice, dark chocolate, and floral nuances supported by exceptionally refined tannins. Despite the warmth and generosity of the vintage, the wine retains remarkable freshness and energy, a hallmark of Canon's limestone terroir.
The texture is seamless and velvety, with impressive depth balanced by precision and lift. Notes of cedar, tobacco, mineral salts, and exotic spice emerge with aeration, leading to an extraordinarily long and elegant finish. Widely regarded as one of the finest modern releases from the estate, Château Canon 2018 combines the opulence of the vintage with classical Saint-Émilion structure and finesse. Built for long-term ageing, it is expected to evolve beautifully for 25 to 30 years or more, developing increasing complexity while maintaining its remarkable balance and purity.

Wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is in the south west of France and is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. It is the largest wine producing region in France, the vast majority being red wines. While it does make large quantities of everyday table wine, outside of Europe, it is mostly noted for producing some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world.
The Garonne and Dordogne rivers run through the region and together naturally irrigate the land while the soils are rich in calcium owing to their limestone content. These two rivers connect and run through to the Atlantic Ocean splitting Bordeaux into 3 distinct parts. We have the left bank, the right bank, and the area between the two rivers called Entre-Deux-Mers.
While in Australia we often see straight Shiraz, Cabernet or Merlots, Bordeaux does not generally produce red wine without blending. The “Bordeaux Blend” is one of the most classic and popular styles of red wine that has spread throughout France as well as throughout the New World.
On the left bank, typical top-quality blends are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. On the right bank top quality blends are typically made of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
In general you can expect red wines from Bordeaux to taste more earthy in flavour compared to those from the New World wine regions that tend to be more fruit flavour driven.
