About This Wine
Bout d'Zan refers to a traditional French licorice sweet (Zan) but it was also the nickname of grower Hélène Thibon's father in his childhood. This comes from 35-year-old biodynamically managed vines rooted in a range of highland soils-some galets roulés (rolled alluvial 'pudding' stones), some sandy clay, and some lower-lying limestone parcels. The 2016 blend is roughly 75% Grenache, 25% Syrah. One third of the blend is aged for nine months in old foudre, while the remainder is raised in cement vats. This is a wildly perfumed and seductive wine and simply amazing value. There is plenty of juicy red berry and macerated plum aromas as well as some garrigue. The palate is packed with energy and layers of dark cherry, and dark chocolate fruit framed by cotton-soft tannins. There's load of flavour impact but also high country freshness and finesse. Bargain.
