About this Wine

One might say we've set the flavour bar quite high... and we're confident that our 2022 Riesling more than meets the challenge of it's predecessors. This is a unique, vibrant and superbly balanced wine that is racy on the palate and will leave you thirsty for more.
For those who are yet to taste these over the years, a quick heads up that this is not a typical Aussie Riesling. Our grapes originate from very old Tasmanian vines (planted at Meadowbank in 1974) combined with Gerald's more recently planted German Riesling clones. The cool-climate conditions that sweep through our hidden valley continue to produce fruit of exceptional taste and quality. Our winemaker, Peter Dredge, then splits these Riesling ferments between stainless steel tanks (for refined freshness) and old French oak barrels (for complexity and texture) - the final blend produces a wine where acid and the gentlest kiss of residual sugar dance together in perfect harmony. A truly captivating wine that is completely and utterly delicious.

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.

Critic reviews

The Wine Front – "It’s like crunching straight into a Granny Smith apple. There’s lime there too, whispered with fruit sweetness, and notes of hay, grapefruit, florals and herbs, though it’s the apple character that drives it. At least part of this wine spent time in oak and it’s slipped with texture as a result, though it’s a minor element; the wine still cuts on through, like the glimmer of a sunrise on water, and finishes long." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

James Halliday – "Purity and drinkability writ large from Peter Dredge and the team at Meadowbank Wines. Light straw in colour with pure aromas of Meyer lemon, lime and peach skin with notes of crushed stone, pressed white flowers, almond paste, dried mandarin rind and liminal hints of poached pear. It's a wonderfully textural wine, playing on the tension between fruit and acidity, sapid yet expressive, enchanting at the moment with a lot of promise in the cellar." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)
