Critic reviews

James Suckling – Very attractive nose with ripe blackcurrants, spiced chocolate, grilled thyme, hazelnuts and bacon. Notes of tobacco and cedar, too. Full-bodied, so refined and polished with layers of finely chiselled tannins spread evenly across the wine and beautifully integrated. Blooming fruit with spicy herbs, peppermint and violets. Very long and persistent with a steady, mineral sensation in the finish. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2020 Biserno is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small part Petit Verdot. This is an enriched and profound wine with round tones of black fruit, spice, cured tobacco and tarry smoke. Biserno is shapely and generous with a full-bodied approach that is accented by crushed stone and pencil shaving. You get a lot of intensity and texture with this opulent, cellar-worthy wine.

About this Wine

Under the supervision of Lodovico Antinori, Biserno is the wine of the same name from the Tenuta di Biserno winery. Biserno reflects the excellent terroir and microclimate of the Upper Maremma coastal area. Only the best grapes are selected for the blend, resulting in a wine with depth, intensity, complexity, longevity and elegance. Or, as they say: “A thought-provoking wine”. In 1995, Lodovico Antinori discovered a domain which he later transformed into Tenuta di Biserno with his brother Piero and landowner Umberto Mannoni. The Tuscan winery has 49 hectares of estate and is located in Alta Maremma in Western Tuscany between the hills of Bibbona. The vines planted on the vineyards are mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot and in smaller quantities Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wines of Tuscany

Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian, is one of the most iconic Italian regions for wine, scenery, and history. Located in central Italy along the west coast, its production of Sangiovese wines is world renowned. Some of Italy’s most famous subregions for Sangiovese such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can be found here.

Tuscany makes both simple and top tier, age worthy Sangiovese wines. At entry-level you have a wine that is pizza and pasta friendly with bright and juicy red fruit. On the other hand, the highest quality representations of Sangiovese are remarkably complex with flavours ranging from sour cherry, balsamic, dried herbs and leather to fresh earth, dried flowers, anise and tobacco.

In evidence of the quality produced, Tuscany produces the third highest volume of DOC and DOCG quality wines in Italy, only trailing Piedmont, and Veneto. DOC and DOCG wines are the highest designation for Italian wines, while you will often see the IGT classification used to represent wines from Toscana that do not reach the standards for DOC/G.

There is another unofficial class of Tuscan wines called Super Tuscans which also command high prices. These wines are often made from international wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, with or without Sangiovese.
