About this Wine

92 POINTS - Wine Pilot
"Long a curiosity on the Aussie wine scene and a wine that must have appeared in a thousand options games, this is our most famous zin. Deep red, burly with chocolate and cherry notes with serious concentration here. Anyone more familiar with those froth and frivolous Zins from the States will be blown away – there are, of course, plenty of zinfandels from the US which are equally impressive or even more so, but none from downunder match the Cape Mentelle. It comes from the Wallcliffe Vineyard, planted by David Hohnen in 1974. At 15.5%, it is no shrinking violet, but then this wine has never been that with 9% shiraz blended in. 50% new oak which hails 50% from France, 25% American and 25% Hungarian.

It is perhaps a little more blocky than flowing on the palate with black fruits and liquorice. It is powerful and with good tannins plus plenty of oak, though all are well balanced. This is a really good zin and one of the best I’ve seen from Cape Mentelle."

APPEARANCE

Vibrant mulberry.

NOSE
Red currants and raspberries, well-framed by black pepper, sweet dark caramel and oak reminding of smouldering Hickory ashes.

PALATE
Crunchy red cherries and an enticing blend of Asian all-spice, red liquorice and star anise, developing into warm mocha notes carried by fine grain savoury tannins and graphite notes characteristic of our Wallcliffe vineyard.

Margaret River Wine

In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.

For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.
