Undoubtedly one of the greatest examples of Chardonnay in the world.
The Cullen Kevin John Chardonnay sits comfortably amongst the pantheon of Australia's finest Chardonnays. Vanya Cullen's unrelenting quest for winemaking excellence is beautifully realised in this ode to her late father, Dr Kevin John Cullen. The man's passion for Margaret River Chardonnay was legendary and this wine surely does him proud. Harvested on Kevin John’s 100th birth year.
"The mid-yellow colour is not 100% filter-bright (presumably unfiltered), and it has a fluffy baker's yeast bouquet with an edginess that suggests and struggling fermentation, together with creamy, cashewnutty, bready nuances, lemon juice as well, dried pear appearing later. The palate is quite delicate and reserved, youthfully undeveloped and dry, the line seamless and long with a core of sweet fruit followed by distinct tannin which adds a gentle, drying grip. Very good intensity, the palate especially appealing. A powerful chardonnay that dances to its own tune." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
"Gee, it’s a powerful and dry spicy wine. Lemon peel, cinnamon and clove spice, pear, fresh pineapple, apricot, and ripe lime, roasted peanuts. It’s flinty, zesty, kind of oaky too, but the fruit swallows it up, and carries on with aniseed, dried pear, lavish spice, tight grapefruity acidity, very intense, flinty and dry, chamomile and ginger on a finish of superb length. Chalky, spicy, oaky, a whole lot of Chardonnay power here, It’s bursting with vitality and it’s pretty full on as a young wine; like staring at the sun. But give it time, and it should reward most handsomely." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
