Gaja Costa Russi Barbaresco 2022 is one of the most celebrated single-vineyard wines produced by the legendary Gaja estate. First released as a single-vineyard bottling in 1978, Costa Russi originates from a south-facing hillside whose name combines costa (sun-exposed slope) and Russi, the nickname of the vineyard's former owner. Since 2013, the wine has been produced entirely from Nebbiolo and classified once again as Barbaresco DOCG, highlighting the purity and identity of this exceptional cru.
The 2022 vintage displays an intensely aromatic bouquet of rose petals, wild strawberry, red cherry, blood orange, violet, and crushed herbs, layered with subtle notes of spice, tobacco, and mineral complexity. On the palate, it combines remarkable elegance with concentration, delivering vibrant red fruit flavours supported by silky tannins and bright acidity. Costa Russi is often regarded as the most graceful and approachable of Gaja's three historic Barbaresco single vineyards, offering extraordinary finesse while maintaining the depth and structure required for long-term ageing.
The finish is exceptionally long and refined, revealing layers of dried flowers, liquorice, crushed stone, and savoury complexity. While captivating in its youth, the 2022 possesses the balance, precision, and pedigree to evolve beautifully for decades, developing the truffle, forest floor, and tertiary nuances that define the world's greatest Nebbiolo wines.
