James Halliday – If you are expecting or, indeed, wanting a tropical, punchy wine, walk away. If you want a complex, layered, textural sauvignon blanc, stick around. Wild-yeast fermented in French oak foudre and oak puncheons with some skin contact, hence the pale gold hue and excellent phenolic tension on the palate. In the mix, quince paste, fennel flower and seeds, dried lemon-lime slices and some oatmeal biscuits. The palate is all about texture, layers of flavour and mouth-watering acidity. Classy and great on its own, even better with food.

Vasse Felix Sauvignon Blanc 2022
Pale yellow with a green and bronze tinge. Alluring notes of subdued seaspray and preserved lemon sit within an exotic fruit fusion of mango straps, passionfruit and guava. Light Japanese herb powder, a hint of green tea and ginger perfumed candle wax add to this aromatic experience. A juicy, plump core with fine powdery tannins surrounds the palate which is somehow succulent and juicy, yet savoury and dry all at once. Subtle notes of blackcurrant, violets and savoury old oak linger.

Margaret River Wine
In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.
For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.
