This is the first vintage of the Legacy Sauvignon Blanc in our artisanal range of wines, which defines the highest quality, and sets the direction for the Cullen Wines brand. The conditions for the 2019 vintage created wines of great aromatics and elegance, and yet with great power. An iron fist in a velvet glove. This Sauvignon Blanc came from vines planted in 1988 producing a minuscule yield of 1.87 tonnes per hectare. An outstanding batch of fruit, harvested on a biodynamic flower day, that has become an outstanding wine. It was crushed to tank and left on skins for 8 days, aged in 20% new puncheons and barriques. This wine has had no fining.

Margaret River Wine

In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.
For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.

James Halliday – Fruit from Block 1 picked on a flower day (MOSH), 8 days on skins, through basket to puncheons (20% new) where it matured for 6 months. 2019 was a cool year, producing mineral, aromatic and very fine wines. This is no exception. Salted edamame, sugar snap, jasmine tea, white currant, green apple skin, juniper berry and salt bush eddy around on the palate, swirling in and out of exotically spiced oak, crushed limestone/talc/basalt/petrichor. Evokes cicadas on a hot afternoon sea breeze, somehow. This is the most profound sauvignon blanc in Australia. - Erin Larkin (Halliday Wine Companion)
James Suckling – A complex nose of forest herbs, pine needle, citrus and moss. Medium-bodied and savory. Forest floor and wet stone. Full of fascinating character. Ginger root. Turmeric. Long and nuanced. Six days on skins. Delicious already but will age wonderfully. Drink or hold. Screw cap. From biodynamically grown grapes. 18 October 2022
