About this Wine

Hughes & Hughes Syrah 2024 is a beautifully fragrant and refined cool-climate Syrah that showcases the elegance and freshness of southern Tasmania. Produced by brothers Jonny and Matt Hughes, the wine is sourced from vineyards in the Coal River Valley and Derwent Valley, where long growing seasons allow slow ripening and excellent flavour development. A small portion of whole-bunch fermentation and maturation in older French oak contribute savoury complexity while preserving fruit purity and vineyard expression.

The 2024 vintage opens with lifted aromas of blackberry, mulberry, violet, cracked pepper, olive tapenade, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky, combining vibrant red and black fruit with savoury herbs, mineral notes, and fine chalky tannins. Rather than power and richness, the focus is on perfume, finesse, and drinkability. Bright acidity and a long, graceful finish make this a classic modern Tasmanian Syrah with excellent balance and freshness. It is particularly suited to lamb, duck, chargrilled vegetables, and mushroom dishes, and can be enjoyed lightly chilled.

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
