Critic reviews

Decanter – The second of this year’s outstanding 2022 Tasmanian Pinot Noirs comes from the Derwent Valley, just to the north of Hobart and in the rain shadow of Mount Wellington. The region can be drought-susceptible in warm summers, but in the wetter season of 2022 its site stood it in good stead. This is a darker wine that its pan-Tasmanian peer, but beautifully crafted: singing red fruits without any shadowing from oak, and with the intrinsic grace and charm of the Derwent Valley’s fruit well to the fore. On the palate, it is pure, bright and mouthfilling, packed with juicy raspberry; both tannins and acids are soft and sustaining. They nourish and ease the gorgeous fruit core through the palate to a gently subsiding finish. There’s just a touch of tarry complexity behind those fruits. Virtuoso work from a Pinot region of extraordinary promise. Best In Show, Decanter World Wine Awards 2024

Jacoben sits 8km north of Lowestoft on the northern side of the Derwent River. It faces south, which goes against everything the teach you at university about planting vineyards in the southern hemisphere! This site looks directly across the river to the Lubiana Vineyard and winery. Similar to Lowestoft, the soils are considered podzoic, with more sandstone and obvious alluvial contents. Quite significantly more free draining in nature than Lowestoft. Quite a lot cooler during the growing season also, as there is a fog called the “Bridgewater Jerry” which comes down the Derwent River and has quite the cooling effect. Very similar to Sonoma and Russian River in Northern California.

Superb Pinot Noir from the Jacoben Vineyard was hand-picked and fermented in 2T open top fermenters, with 15% whole bunch inclusion. Gently hand plunged, with gentle pressing to tank post MLF, followed by 10 months maturation in large format French oak (25% new) before selective barrel blending and bottling with minimal additions.

Bursting with rich, plump forest fruits, this dark ruby wine presents heady aromas of cherry, woody herbs and black tea. Finely grained tannins framed by juicy acidy give this wine generous tension and drive. in large format French oak (25% new) before selective barrel blending and bottling with minimal additions. – Liam McElhinney

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
